As sports fans we're all part of a team, and being part of a team gives us pride and comfort and togetherness. It takes away fear, it takes away prejudice, it takes away isolation and loneliness. It takes away hate."
I wanted to be sure that people saw the fantastic essay by former Green Bay Packer star LeRoy Butler that appeared in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Sunday, September 11."Sports Brings us together, the way it should be" talks very clearly about the culture of sports and the power it has to bring people from all backgrounds of life together for a common cause.
Not only was he the pioneer of the Lambeau Leap, but LeRoy Butler was a legendary Packer defender. Butler is an athlete who chooses to take his talent beyond the game and use his podium to inspire people to be their best. The few books that he has been part of writing are not simply football books, they are stories of overcoming obstacles and refusing to give in. His essay in the Milwaukee JS suggests that perhaps society could learn a lesson or two from sports, and that there is no reason we can't all get along with the same sense of brotherhood and camaraderie that we feel when cheering on our beloved sports teams. Butler's stories are definitely worth having on your library shelves.
