Getting the discussion started......A few years ago I suggested the English department adopt an "article of the week" to improve nonfiction reading skills. The response and results have been fantastic, as these articles have become a catalyst for class discussion of theme, character, social awareness. Interestingly enough, a good share of the articles turned out to be sports related. I discovered that it didn't matter if the kids were "jocks" or not, there were amazing stories and universal lessons that bridged the social cliques and backgrounds of those in the room.
